The Day of Love

14 Feb

Valentine’s Day is a funny day. In my younger years I hated it. Every Freddie Prinze Jr. movie made me believe I would be swept off my feet by a boy I’d been pining over. But year after year that didn’t happen. The closest I got was being taken to see the movie Daredevil the year Valentine’s Day happened to fall on the coldest day of the year. Suffice to say the temperature of my heart adjusted to match that of the outdoors.
As I got a little older I just acted like it wasn’t for me likely to avoid another disastrous date involving a Ben and Jen movie. Eventually I legitimately stopped caring about it.

As time went on, I met The Husband, adopted the fur-baby and continued into a life of love with someone by my side.

In a home of two people who were “meh” to this day, it’s just never become a thing. Sure we share cards and a dietary appropriate treat (FYI: Love means not wanting to ruin someone’s digestive tract) but that’s about it.

This year though with so much garbage in the news and so much hurt and hate, I’ve been trying to focus on the good things in my life, mainly love.

Of all the things I worry about on any given day, love is not one of them. I love love. I love the feeling of love. Not just romantic love, but the love you share with friends, family, random puppies you see on the street, etc…

The feeling of a happy heart that has become that way because of a multitude of people. Am I IN love? Absolutely. And I consider myself insanely lucky for that. Outside of The Husband do I have love? You bet.

So on a day that I don’t really love all that much, I did want to send a little love note into the world for the people who have touched my heart and let me feel loved, and who let me love them in return.

Isn’t that what this is all about anyway? This isn’t singles awareness day for those who aren’t in a romantic relationship, it’s a moment for all of us, paired or not to feel love.
So to the people in my corner that have warmed my heart, make me laugh, build me up when I’m down, listen to my silly ideas, send random notes even if we haven’t talked in a while, know that you’re loved. And thanks for loving me.

Dog Days of Summer

13 Jul

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been 15 years since Elle Woods came into our lives!

In honour of this ridiculously important milestone in movie history, I wanted to look back at one of my favourite interviews to date.

Let’s drift back to August 2013….

On Friday I found out that the canine stars of Neptune Theatres Legally Blonde – The Musical would be the celebrity judges of the Downtown Halifax Business Commission’s Dog Day’s of Summer Doggy Fashion Show and I knew I needed to get in on the action.

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m the biggest dog lover around so this was a particularly exciting interview for me.

Check out the interview with the city’s most fashionable and talented pups!

A huge thank you to the team at Neptune Theatre, Downtown Halifax Business Commission and Kim and Amanda – the pups owners for making this happen!

Tyler Labine Is The New Chris Pratt

14 Apr

On Tuesday night I went to see the movie The Boss. Melissa McCarthy looked to take a turn back to the hilarious and Kristen Bell can do no wrong in my books.

What I didn’t realize was that Canada’s most important sea-faring sidekick, Tyler Labine (Jimmy Farrell) played Bell’s love interest.

As I sat getting charmed by Labine I realized it. He is the new Chris Pratt.  I had the same ah ha! moment about Chris Pratt in Zero Dark Thirty. One minute they were adorable funny guys that you may not think twice about, the next certified studs. This isn’t just about looks. The characters they played were not set up to be the winners. Not until now.

I tweeted my revelation and this happened:

I’ve accepted this challenge but I refused to take it lightly. I’m not just going for lookalikes here. This person had to be the complete package.

48 hours have passed and as I sat watching the Jays game thinking about the type of snack I’d request if I were in the dugout, I realized who it was. (PS My dugout snack would be a bag of popcorn with  Skittles mixed in it.)

Before I reveal who I landed on, first let me take a moment to explore some bizarre connections I’ve uncovered while doing my research.

When I finished school and moved back to Vancouver I took to doing extra work in movies and TV shows to make some extra cash. My first extra role was in the Diablo Coady movie Jennifer’s Body. I was a little to wrapped up in Adam Brody to know Chris Pratt was also in the same film.

Flash forward to a couple of weeks later, I worked on a show called Reaper starring none other than Tyler Labine! This particular fact was not lost on me at the time of filming. Unfortunately no photographic evidence of that cameo is available at this time but trust that it happened.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get back to the matter at hand. WHO IS THE NEW TYLER LABINE?!

I present you with, Matt Lowe. Matt Lowe played “Meatball” in Hart of Dixie. Meatball went from affable yokel to winning the the lust of Bluebell’s finest Belle, Lemon Breeland. They had a steamy affair that she kept secret, but even Lemon knew the potential. The show ended and the next thing I know he’s in a Milkbone commercial acting as an adorable doggy Dad. Consider me sold.

Much like the forefathers to come before him, he’s got a sense of humour, piercing eyes, and a smile that will make your heart melt.

Hang tight Meatball, you’ll be a leading man before you know it.

See the succession below. I dare you to disagree.

World Mastercard Fashion Week – Triarchy

25 Mar

Some families just have good jeans. But in this case the Taubenfligel family also has some pretty amazing genes to boot. Aside from being ridiculously good looking, Adam, Ania and Mark are three siblings with tremendous talent.

Screen Shot 2014-03-25 at 8.24.34 PM

On paper it seems as though their interests couldn’t be any different. Ania in equestrian show jumping, Mark in custom motorcycle design and Adam in fashion. But as it turns out these differences came together to inspire Triarchy – their equestrian and motorcycle inspired denim collection.

I had the pleasure of checking out their Fall 2014 collection at  World Mastercard Fashion Week in Toronto – a show in which they are no strangers to. The show opened with a beautiful and touching vignette of Ania explaining the story behind the brand. Born in Vancouver, bred in LA, this family business was built on the foundation of quality, craftsmanship and a love for denim. Three siblings who may not always be in the same place, always have their business keeping them together.

Next came the collection. From the first pair of denim I was in love. I mean just look at this:

Beautiful right?

The collection has a timelessness about it, but also has hints of leather and patterns throughout it giving it that equestrian / biker flare. What I loved most about the collection was how wearable it was. You looked at model after model and forgot that these were in fact models. All I kept thinking was “Oh! I want those! And those! And those!” And aside from just WANTING those jeans, I could actually go out and get a pair.

So needless to say I will be promptly getting myself into a pair of Triarchy jeans and will absolutely be keeping an eye on this trio.

Congratulations to Adam, Ania and Mark for an incredibly amazing collection at Mastercard World Fashion week!

Visit the Triarchy website to learn more about the brand and check out their amazing collection!

Letterkenny Problems – Canadian Screen Award Nominee!

24 Feb

A few months back I shared a post about Letterkenny Problems. A YouTube series, and might I say sensation, near and dear to my heart.

Well as it would turn out Letterkenny Problems has been nominated for a Canadian Screen Award in the category of  Best Original Program or Series produced for Digital Media.

If you’re not yet familiar with the Canadian Screen Awards they were previously two events – The Gemini Awards and the Genie Awards. But now the Canadian Screen Awards recognize all things great in Canadian Television, Film and Digital Media.

So on March 4th keep your fingers crossed and check those Twitter feeds to see if Letterkenny has won. But to paraphrase a text from my Mom “OMG I just realized they might still WIN an award! I was just so excited they were nominated!!!” Frankly, I too couldn’t be more ridiculously proud than I already am and just knowing the brain child of these two childhood pals is something that people are watching and quoting is enough to put a smile of my face.

So check out the post from June 2013 below with a  couple of new videos added, and have a laugh or two with the boys of Letterkenny.

WARNING – Language may not be appropriate for everyone. So earmuffs for the kids please!

Some of my favourite people in the entire world come from a little tiny town in Ontario. Two that are especially near and dear to my heart are The Husband and his BFF Jared Keeso. A few months back they started a Twitter account recounting the all too true tales of the things that happen in their hometown and it caught on like wildfire.

So Jared being the talented actor, writer and producer that he is, approached The Husband about the idea of turning their Twitter account into a series of shorts.

Well I’m happy to announce that the boys have struck a chord. They may come from a small town in Ontario, but as it turns out – people from small towns all over the place can relate to the tales these two are telling. The first instalment of Letterkenny has over 130,000 views on Funny or Die and has been given “Immortal” status.

So here you have the first 3 episodes of Letterkenny Problems. Enjoy! And hey – if you like these – tell your friends 🙂

Thanksgiving

11 Oct

Not every year can be your favourite year. Considering the past couple of years have been insanely good to me and my friends I was expecting some bumps in the road to present themselves at some point.

2013 has been a year of change. Not all bad but not all great. The gang at This Needs to Stop has had engagements, amazing career changes, moves to new countries and jobs that we love more than we ever thought we could love a job changing unexpectedly.

The past few months have been a true test of patience, resilience and friendships. Luckily while some of those have worn thin at times the friendship department has not once let me down.

Last night while playing a hilarious round of Cards Against Humanity with some of the This Needs to Stop gang, the pain in my abs caused by all the laughter reminded me of just how lucky I am.

Yes things aren’t 100% where I’d like them to be not just for myself but for some of the people around me. Yes I’ve had days where I’ve crawled into bed after work and pulled the covers over my head because I just needed an escape. But I can say that each and every day I’ve had an amazing gesture of kindness (even if to them it was such a tiny act)  from my closest of friends, to friends that I’ve met through Twitter who have turned out to be amazing support systems, to random people sending me good thoughts because for some reason I may have seemed like I needed them.

The power of a kind word, an answered email when you need some guidance, a good laugh, a good set of ears to listen is the cure to help keep your chin up and remind you of how much great there is going on in your life even if the road has taken you to an unexpected place.

So 2013, you and I may not be the best of friends, but you’ve certainly given me a lot to be thankful for even if you’ve had a funny way of showing it.

This Thanksgiving while I spend time with family and friends I will continue to remind myself of how lucky I am to be surrounded by such amazing people.

Thank you to every single person who has helped me “Keep Calm and Carry On” in 2013. You will never appreciate how thankful I am for you.

Legally Blonde – So Amazing It Might Be Illegal!

12 May

Recently we had the pleasure of going to see Legally Blonde The Musical playing at Neptune Theatre.

We love going to Neptune Theatre and after the stellar season they’ve had, I had high hopes for the musical adaptation of one of my favourite movies.

Neptune Theatre did Elf some serious justice, but I was still a bit nervous given my love for Legally Blonde the movie, and the fact that it wasn’t a musical. WELL. I’ve learned again to never doubt Neptune Theatre. Within seconds I was thrown into a place of extreme delight. Seriously. I was like a kid at Christmas hanging onto every last note. I smiled and laughed so much I’m pretty sure my face still hurts.

Lindsey Frazier starred as Elle Woods and was so full of spunk and life it was ridiculous. She was over the top in the best possible way and should Reese Witherspoon not be busy arguing with Atlanta Police and had the delight of seeing this play, I think she would agree that Lindsey was Elle Woods to a tee.

The Greek Chorus – which was essentially the imaginary travel version of Delta Nu, was nothing short of hysterical. The girls who made up the Greek Chorus had fantastic songs, hilarious lines and great comedic timing.

greek_chorus

And for the songs. Well, they were nothing short of amazing…and awfully memorable to the point that I can’t stop singing them….

Oh my god, oh my god you guys*, did I mention there were dogs in the play? Real life dogs? In outfits?

elle_woods

Overall the audience seemed to have a total blast and even in moments that were so insanely ridiculous, people were lapping it up. A lady next to me who I learned at intermission had never even seen the movie was losing her mind laughing with her daughters. Even The Husband was laughing up a storm.

So once again – another amazing production at Neptune Theatre. You just can’t miss this one. Legally Blonde The Musical will be playing at Neptune Theatre until May 26th!

* Oh my god, oh my god you guys. This song is fabulous. Now this isn’t from Neptune Theatre but it is way too fun not to share.
